Gender & Sex Discrimination Attorney in Iowa
Representing Iowa Employees Against Sex Discrimination Since 2009
Gender and sex discrimination in Iowa workplaces is prohibited under both the Iowa Civil Rights Act (Iowa Code chapter 216) and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. When an employer crosses that line, the right legal response depends on understanding how those two frameworks interact and which filing path best protects your rights. At Newkirk Zwagerman, P.L.C., we represent employees facing these situations throughout Iowa, and we’ve done so since 2009.
Our attorneys are licensed in Iowa and Minnesota, which matters when your employer operates across state lines. We handle workplace discrimination, harassment, and retaliation claims, and our representation extends to school environments and Title IX matters, giving Iowa employees access to a broader range of gender-equity experience than many employment practices offer.
If you believe you’ve been treated unfairly at work because of your sex or gender, contact us for a free, confidential consultation. We represent employees, not employers. Call (515) 497-9409 to speak with our team.
Why Iowa Employees Work with Newkirk Zwagerman, P.L.C.
We built this firm around one side of the table: the employee’s. That focus shapes everything about how we approach a gender discrimination case in Iowa. We don’t divide our attention between worker rights and corporate defense. Every strategy we develop is tailored to the individual in front of us, not applied from a template.
Our attorneys are deeply invested in civil rights, including an implicit bias education practice that informs how we identify and argue discrimination claims. Whether a matter resolves through negotiation or requires trial, we guide clients through each stage and advocate for their priorities at every step. That commitment extends beyond the workplace: we also handle school environment and Title IX matters, an area many employment practices don’t address.

How We Handle Iowa Gender & Sex Discrimination Claims
Most Iowa employment discrimination claims must be filed with the Iowa Office of Civil Rights (IOCR) within 300 days of the discriminatory act. Because the IOCR and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission operate under a work-sharing agreement, a complaint filed with one agency can generally be cross-filed with the other when that option is requested. After a complaint has been pending with the IOCR for at least 60 days, an employee may request a right-to-sue letter to pursue the claim in district court, and a lawsuit based on the state claim must be filed within 90 days of that letter.
Not every instance of unfair treatment meets the legal threshold for discrimination. Before any formal complaint is filed, we help Iowa employees assess whether the facts support a viable claim. That early assessment can prevent procedural missteps that limit a case down the road. From the initial review through agency filings, negotiation, and court proceedings when necessary, we advocate for client confidentiality and priorities at every stage.
We offer free, confidential initial consultations with no pressure to take further action. If you’re weighing your options, speaking with a sex discrimination attorney in Iowa before filing anything can be the right first step.
